Arrive Buenos Aires – 2 Hour Walking Tour

Buenos Aires is a city for walkers. Whether you wish to learn about its engrossing history or just soak up the atmosphere, there is a walking tour here to match your interests.

Upon arrival in Buenos Aires, a Southern Explorations guide will meet you and take you to your hotel. From your hotel, your guide will accompany you by taxi to reach the neighborhood of your choice and then show you the highlights. Safe, flat, and fascinating, these neighborhoods, traveled on foot, will make a memorable component to your Argentina tour.

Spend the rest of the day at your leisure, enjoying the many sights and sounds of this sophisticated metropolis.

Early morning transfer to the airport for your flight to El Calafate. Upon arrival in Calafate your driver will meet you at the airport. From Calafate continue for a four hour drive, with stunning views of Fitz Roy and Glacier National Park in the background. Along the way, enjoy the Patagonian steppe and its unique ecology and impressive landscapes. The drive is properly rewarded upon the arrival at your hotel located in the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park and Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy massifs. In the evening, you will meet your private guide for a briefing on the next day’s adventure. (B)

Today you have your choice of Patagonia day hikes, ranging from very mellow to strenuous. For those looking for a lighter venture, hike to a pair of close and incredibly beautiful viewpoints. Mirador de los Condores boasts views of El Chalten (Fitz Roy), Cerro Torre, and the Valley of Rio de Las Vuelta. Mirador de las Aguilas offers a panoramic view of Lago Viedma and the Patagonian Steppe. If you prefer a more strenuous trek, we recommend the full-day hike to Laguna de Los Tres at the base of Mt. Fitz Roy, an excellent hike offering impressive views the whole way through. Hike north to Laguna Capri, a lake with beautiful views of the granite tower, and continue on along the Chorrillo del Salto which provides the foreground of many of the most breathtaking photos of Fitz Roy. You’ll break for lunch to take in the scenery and gain energy for the climb. Travel towards the mountains base from Rio Blanco to Laguna de los Tres and neighboring Laguna Sucia with turquoise waters. Here you are rewarded with the inspiring backdrop of Glacier de los Tres, Glacier Rio Blanco, the mythical El Chalten, and its adjoining peaks, surely a Patagonia tour must-see. After a memorable day of trekking Patagonia, return to the comfort of your hotel for a restful night’s sleep. (B,L)

Spend another day exploring the El Chalten area of Patagonia. Your knowledgeable guide will have a few trekking options for you to choose from, including from a half day trek to an impressive viewpoint and a more rigorous, all-day guided hike. A lesser-known but outstanding half-day option is the hike to the Mirador Pliegue Tumbado, with panoramic views of the town of El Chalten, as well as Cerro Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre, and Cerro Huemul. Those looking for a more active day may wish to take another of the renowned Patagonia trekking excursions, this time to the base of Mt. Torre, a stunning granite spire at the edge of the Patagonian Ice Field. With your private guide, you will follow the winding trail through the Fitz Roy River Valley, arriving at Lago Toro and the Maestri Lookout with views of Mt. Torre, surrounding peaks of the Adelas range, and glaciers Grande and Adela. You’ll enjoy a picnic lunch along the way. The stunning views and unique terrain make this one of the best Argentina Patagonia hiking experiences in the area. Following today’s memorable excursion, you will return you to your lodgings to enjoy a delicious dinner with views of Rio de las Vueltas and a relaxing final evening in El Chalten (B,L).

After breakfast you will transfer back to the town of Calafate to begin the next leg of your Patagonia tour. Here you will have time to explore this charming lakefront town before meeting a representative from Eolo Lodge to continue the 1 hour drive. Arrive and get settled at Eolo. (B,D)

Today, you will meet a representative from the mini trekking on the road to the Perito Moreno Glacier. Eolo will transfer you in the morning to the meeting spot for the 30 minute drive to the glacier. Here you’ll board a boat on Lago Argentino to reach the massive front wall of blue ice, looking out for icebergs along the way. There you’ll make a small beach landing and walk along an ancient beech forest that meets the glacier to photograph this impressive natural wonder. If you’re feeling especially adventurous, do a little glacier hiking and maybe even witness an ice wall caving into the lake. (This ice hike is recommended only for 12 to sixty-five year old participants who are in good physical condition. Women who are pregnant are restricted from trekking on the ice.) In the afternoon enjoy a picnic lunch, listening to the sounds of melting, popping ice shift into the waters beneath us. In the evening, return to Eolo for another comfortable night’s rest. (B,L,D)

Today is a long travel day, but the areas visited are well worth it. Travel across the Argentinean border to Chile. From there, enter the world-renowned Torres del Paine National Park. View the summer grazing grounds of the now endangered guanacos. Surrounded by the majestic mountains, there you will stop to photograph these fascinating species. The lovely Explora Lodge provides accommodations for the next four nights of our journey. Over evening drinks at the comfortable bar, the guide will discuss a full range of hiking, riding and sightseeing opportunities. (B,L,D)
Activities: Choose from a range of possible hikes or horseback rides to such Patagonia natural wonders as the hanging French glacier, Salto Grande waterfall and Torres del Paine.

These three days of trekking Patagonia are dedicated to exploring the magnificent Torres del Paine. Choose your own adventure, from a hike to Grey glacier on the edge of an iceberg-choked lake or a more challenging climb to the base of the Towers that give the park its name. Exhaust your curiosity and your body in beautiful Torres del Paine with short exploratory walks, horseback rides through flowering fields, or full-day hikes, returning to the comfort of the Explora Lodge (Salto Chico room) at day’s end.
